FROZEN EMPIRE
What is the film about?

This film tells the story of the anthropologist and explorer Vilhjalmur Stefansson whose travels in the Arctic marked a new way of exploring and a new approach to anthropological research. The story is mostly told in Stefansson's own words, using his journals, notebooks and personal letters.
In 1906 the twenty-six year old anthropologist Vilhjalmur Stefansson set out alone to conquer the Canadian Arctic when hundreds of explorers had lost their life without revealing its secrets. They had gone in large ships with men, provisions and heavy weapons, but Stefansson had a different plan.

Settling with the Inuits he became the first anthropologist to "go native". He learned their ways and their language, hunted and travelled with them, shared their lifestyle and their food. Armed with this knowledge he went on to travel in the Arctic for twelve years, living off the land and making his own clothes from furs.

Vilhjalmur Stefansson predicted what now is being
exposed in The Arctic due to Global warming.

THE MISSION
Stefánssons' care for the Arctic
Vilhjálmur Stfánsson came to the artic premises with an open mind, not pre-disposed by arrogance but with an open mind and a firm intention of learning. These are his own words. The knowledge acquired in this fashion he then transmitted to the western societies, all while suggesting that a seafaring canal be opened up via the Artic Ocean, something which is only now to become a reality, The Mediteranian of the North as Stefánsson said. He also emphasized the necessity to respect and conserve the cultures and the lands of the Artic continent. In our times, Vilhjálmur would have been a forceful advocate of fighting the global warming and preserving the high north. But even if Stefánsson was exceedingly foresighted as regards many topics a hundred years ago, he had no inkling of the looming catastrophes which our and future generations are faced with.
